NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–Several thousand jobs are likely to be cut through layoffs and attrition if the $39 billion AT&T Inc. (T) and T-Mobile merger is approved by the federal government in the next 12 to 18 months, analysts say.

A day after AT&T announced it would buy T-Mobile USA to create the biggest wireless carrier in the country, consumer advocates and some members of Congress blasted the deal, arguing the $39 billion merger would lead to higher prices and fewer choices for cellphone users.

We knew nothing good would come from this, but Yahoo News is already reporting it. Your 3G handset will need to be replaced once the merger is complete.
